Two playful young elephants are stealing the spotlight at Werribee Open Range Zoo this school holiday season, delighting families with their cheeky antics.

Since the arrival of nine elephants from Melbourne Zoo in February, the zoo has seen a 41% spike in visitors, with a record-breaking 316,000 guests passing through its gates.

The main stars are two-and-a-half-year-old sisters, Kati and Aiyara, who have captured hearts with their energetic play, often seen splashing around, interacting with each other, and using their trunks in fun, expressive ways.

The zoo’s expansive 21-hectare elephant enclosure—comparable in size to five Melbourne Cricket Grounds—features six unique habitats, allowing the elephants to roam freely and engage in natural behaviours.

“They love the rain,” said zookeeper Phoebe Allen. “They’ll start their skincare routine—soaking, rolling in sand, and exfoliating naturally.”

Adding to the attraction, entry to Werribee Open Range Zoo is free for visitors under the age of 16.
