
The Department of Inland Revenue has informed Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena that indictments will soon be filed at the Colombo High Court against model and actress Piumi Hansamali and Aura Lanka Chairman T.A.C.V. Thambugala over alleged tax evasion.
Senior State Counsel Dinesh Perera, representing the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue, stated that investigation reports on both individuals have been submitted to the Attorney General and that formal charges are expected in due course.
According to the Department, Hansamali is accused of evading Rs. 194 million in personal income tax for 2022 and 2023, in addition to Rs. 95 million in taxes related to a company registered under the name ‘Loliya.’
Thambugala is alleged to have failed to pay Rs. 194 million in personal and additional income taxes, including interest and penalties.
The court was informed that both individuals are being investigated for “wrongful utilisation” under Sections 186, 189, and 190 of the Inland Revenue Act No. 24 of 2017, for willfully failing to pay due taxes. An updated progress report on the ongoing investigations was also submitted to court.
