Pinnawala Elephant orphange celebrates 51st anniversary with opening of new sanctuary

The Department of National Zoological Gardens marked the 51st anniversary of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, highlighting its long-standing contribution to Asian elephant conservation and unveiling a new welfare-focused facility.

Established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation with five rescued calves, the orphanage has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s most prominent conservation centres, recording 76 natural births since its first successful calf was born in 1984 and currently caring for 65 elephants.

To mark the milestone, a “Free Elephant Sanctuary,” locally known as Nidahas Ali Arana, is set to be inaugurated by Environment Minister Dhammika Patabendi, providing a scientifically managed space for adult male elephants during musth while improving animal welfare and caretaker safety.

Officials said the initiative reflects modern zoological standards and supports the long-term goal of maintaining a sustainable population of 50 to 80 elephants, while continuing to promote research, education, tourism, and future advancements in elephant care.
