A young man accused of intimidating young women by demanding nude videos over the past three years was remanded until March 6 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today.
The suspect was arrested by the Computer Crime Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department and produced before court.
An Assistant Police Inspector informed the court that the suspect had allegedly gained illegal access to the mobile phones of several young women through fake internet connections and unauthorized phone access. Police stated that he had downloaded private videos and contacted the victims via WhatsApp, demanding additional explicit content. He is also accused of threatening to release existing material online if the victims refused to comply.
Investigations began in 2023 following complaints lodged by two young women from the Kalutara and Panadura areas. According to police, the suspect used untraceable phone connections and online platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, to carry out the alleged offences. He was arrested after authorities obtained information from Facebook under a court order.
The magistrate also directed prison authorities to obtain a comprehensive medical report regarding the suspect’s mental condition.
