Australian motorists are enjoying some relief at the fuel pump, with petrol prices falling to their lowest levels in four months amid a decline in global oil prices. The national average price of unleaded petrol dropped to just over $1.69 per litre, raising hopes of lower transport costs for households.

However, experts warn that the relief may be temporary, as the government’s fuel excise discount is set to expire, potentially adding 26.3 cents per litre back onto petrol prices and reducing the benefits of the recent decline.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has left interest rates unchanged at 4.35 per cent, providing no immediate relief for mortgage holders. While rates remain on hold, the central bank has indicated that further increases could still be considered if inflation pressures persist.

In a positive development for retirees, new research suggests many Australians may be overestimating the amount of superannuation needed for a comfortable retirement. Industry figures indicate that retirement goals may be more achievable than many people believe.

At the same time, mining giant BHP experienced its biggest one-day share price fall in more than a year after reporting cost increases at a major project in Canada. Despite the setback, the company’s shares remain significantly higher than a year ago, supported by strong demand for copper and other resources linked to the global energy transition.

The latest economic developments highlight a mixed outlook for Australian households, with lower fuel prices offering short-term relief while borrowing costs and broader inflation concerns continue to weigh on family budgets.
