The Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed at the Supreme Court challenging the decision to award the Mannar wind power project to India’s Adani Group have been withdrawn.
The withdrawal follows a motion filed by the Attorney General, stating that Adani had officially informed the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) about its decision to withdraw from the project. As a result, the petitioners, including the Wildlife Nature Protection Society (WNPS) and several scientists, withdrew their petitions.
The petitions challenged the May 2024 Cabinet decision that awarded the project to Adani and authorized a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) at a rate of 8.26 US cents per kWh for 20 years. If implemented, the project would have been Sri Lanka’s largest renewable energy investment, valued at $1 billion, with a proposed capacity of 484 MW.
