Parliamentary committee to seek expert input on education reforms

Amidst an ongoing public debate on the government’s education reforms, the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee on Education has decided to consult experts who have previously contributed to shaping education policy.

Committee Chair MP Hesha Withanage informed members that experts from relevant fields with experience in past education reforms will be invited to provide a comprehensive review of the proposed changes.

He affirmed the Committee’s full support for ensuring that well-structured and effective education reforms are implemented.

Committee members also stressed the importance of properly structured syllabi to ensure the success of the reform process.

The meeting was attended by Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Training, Nalaka Kaluwewa, representatives of the National Education Commission, the Director General of the National Institute of Education, and several other senior ministry officials.

Ministry representatives provided the Committee with detailed explanations of the proposed reforms.

The Committee’s attention was also directed to the Samurdhi (Amendment) Bill, during which members inquired into the operations of the Samurdhi Bank.

Following the discussion, the Committee granted approval for the Bill to be presented to Parliament for its Second Reading.

Members of Parliament Sunil Rajapaksha, Chanaka Madugoda, Thurairasa Ravikaran, Nilusha Lakmali Gamage (Attorney-at-Law), and Krishnan Kalaichelvi also took part in the meeting.
