Parliament to meet on 8th and 9th of May for key debates and motions

The Secretary General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera, announced that Parliament will convene on 8th and 9th of May.

The agenda for these sessions was decided at the Committee on Parliamentary Business meeting held on 2nd of May chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

On 8th of May Parliament will begin at 9.30 a.m. with time allocated for Business of Parliament under Standing Orders 22(1) to 22(6).

From 10.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m., oral questions will be taken up, followed by questions under Standing Order 27(2) until 11.30 a.m.

A debate on the resolution under the Customs Ordinance relating to Import Duties, based on Gazette Extraordinary No. 2421/05, will take place from 11.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

The Opposition’s Adjournment Motion will be taken up from 5.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.

On May 9, the same schedule will be followed for the morning session, including oral questions and questions under Standing Order 27(2).

From 11.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., six Private Members’ Motions will be debated in Parliament.

These motions cover a range of issues including reducing privileges of MPs and former leaders, increasing state involvement in food distribution, and implementing audit recommendations.

Other motions address providing housing for all families, regulating bus imports to meet transport standards, and utilizing unused development buildings for public benefit.

The day will conclude with the Adjournment Time questions from 5.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
