Over Rs. 6 million spent to train a doctor: Minister

Upali Pannila stated that the government spends over Rs. 6 million of public funds to train a single doctor, highlighting the significant investment made in medical education.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a private hospital in Kiribathgoda, the Minister emphasized that higher education, particularly in the medical field, requires substantial state funding compared to other professions.

He noted that the cost of producing an engineer is approximately Rs. 3 million, underscoring that medical training demands nearly double the expenditure.

Referring to the historical legacy of King Buddhadasa, often regarded as a “Veda Raja” or physician king, the Minister highlighted the long-standing respect for doctors in Sri Lankan society.

He expressed confidence that medical professionals would continue to uphold this tradition through dedicated service and ethical practice.

The Minister made these remarks while stressing the importance of maintaining high standards and accountability in professions that are heavily supported by public funds.
