Corruption in Sri Lanka’s public sector continues to be a major concern, with over 2,100 complaints filed with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) between January and July 2025.
During this period, the Commission conducted 44 raids and arrested 31 public officials, including school principals, police officers, labour department personnel, and Motor Traffic Department employees, for various bribery and corruption offences.
Among the most notable cases was the arrest of three Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) officials last week, including a former Assistant Commissioner now serving at the Ministry of Lands. They were accused of authorizing an illegal vehicle registration in violation of proper procedures.
In a separate operation in May, a Deputy Commissioner of the DMT and two others were arrested, with authorities recovering over Rs. 4.1 million in unaccounted cash.
CIABOC emphasized that these arrests reflect its commitment to cracking down on corruption at all levels of public service and warned that anti-corruption efforts would continue under the new administration.
The Commission urged public servants to uphold integrity and encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity, assuring that all complaints will be treated seriously and investigated accordingly.
