Over 2,000 Sri Lankan youth gain employment in South Korea this year

A total of 2,522 Sri Lankan youth have secured employment in South Korea over the past few months, according to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).

The latest group of 60 workers, including seven young women, departed yesterday (19th) for jobs in the manufacturing sector. This marks the 923rd batch of Sri Lankans deployed to South Korea under the existing employment agreement.

The SLBFE noted an increasing number of young women seeking overseas employment in South Korea, with 85 women already departing for jobs in 2025.

Employment opportunities are facilitated under the E-9 visa category, through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the SLBFE and South Korea’s Human Resources Development Institute. Available jobs span across the manufacturing, construction, fisheries, and agriculture sectors.

The selection process is conducted online through a computer-based examination, ensuring fairness and eliminating outside influence.

Workers are allowed to stay in South Korea for 4 years and 10 months, with the option to reapply under the same scheme upon completing their contracts.

In 2024, a total of 7,122 Sri Lankans obtained employment in South Korea, reflecting the strong demand and continued interest in these opportunities.
