Over 200 elders seek financial aid via WhatsApp hotline

More than 200 senior citizens have filed complaints seeking financial maintenance from their children through a dedicated WhatsApp hotline introduced by the National Secretariat for Elders.

Director Chathura Mihidum stated that the hotline — 0707 89 88 89 — connects elderly individuals directly to the Secretariat’s Relief and Support Service, offering a simple and accessible way to request assistance.

To ensure timely action, new maintenance boards have been established to review and resolve the complaints efficiently. Mihidum also announced plans to allow online participation for complainants through Divisional Secretariat offices, further improving accessibility and convenience.

The initiative comes amid rising concerns over the welfare of Sri Lanka’s aging population, many of whom face increasing financial and social hardships.
