According to the Department of Census and Statistics, 15.1% of Sri Lankans lost their jobs in 2023 as a result of the economic crisis.
The data shows that a higher percentage of males lost either their primary or secondary employment compared to females.
During this period, 60.5% of households reported a decline in their monthly income, reflecting the widespread financial strain caused by the crisis.
The final report of the Household Survey also revealed that 91.1% of households experienced an increase in average monthly expenses, while only 5.3% saw no change.
As a result of the economic downturn, 22% of households fell into debt, and 7% of the population was unable to access adequate healthcare services.
These findings underscore the far-reaching socio-economic consequences of the 2023 economic crisis on Sri Lankan families and individuals.
