Over 1,000 children diagnosed with cancer annually

Health officials have revealed that over 1,000 children in the country are diagnosed with cancer each year.

According to Dr. Buddhika Somawardhana, a blood cancer and bone marrow transplant specialist at Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, 30% of these cases are leukemia, while 25% affect the central nervous system.

Annually, around 40,000 cancer cases are reported in the country, with approximately 4,000 being blood cancer diagnoses.

Dr. Somawardhana also highlighted that one-third of all cancers are preventable.
