Oscar Piastri triumphs in thrilling wet-dry Belgian grand prix

Oscar Piastri secured victory in a dramatic wet-to-dry Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, fending off McLaren teammate and championship rival Lando Norris to extend his Drivers’ Championship lead to 16 points.

The race was delayed by nearly 80 minutes due to heavy rain, with competitive action beginning on Lap 5.

Piastri made a decisive move immediately after the restart, overtaking polesitter Norris with a clean pass along the Kemmel Straight before Les Combes.

Taking advantage of track position, Piastri pitted for medium tyres on Lap 12, while Norris stayed out an extra lap and switched to hards, rejoining the race nine seconds behind.

Despite managing the softer compound, Piastri maintained a solid lead, with Norris only closing the gap to 3.1 seconds before a small mistake at La Source extended the final margin to 3.4 seconds.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium, finishing 20 seconds behind Piastri and holding off Max Verstappen, who came close to a podium finish with a fourth-place result.

George Russell finished a quiet race in fifth for Mercedes, while Alex Albon held off intense pressure from Lewis Hamilton to secure sixth for Williams.

Hamilton, starting from the pit lane, made up 11 positions and was among the first to switch to slick tyres, eventually finishing seventh.

Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) and Gabriel Bortoleto (Kick Sauber) finished eighth and ninth respectively, while Pierre Gasly (Alpine) rounded out the points in tenth after leading a DRS train.

Haas’ Oliver Bearman just missed out on points in P11, followed by Nico Hulkenberg in P12, who dropped back after a second stop.

Yuki Tsunoda lost two places late in the race but still finished ahead of Lance Stroll, Esteban Ocon, Kimi Antonelli, Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz — all of whom started from the pit lane.

Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar completed the field, with all drivers finishing the race and no safety car interruptions after the delayed start.
