A scuffed and well-worn black leather Birkin bag — the very first ever created by Hermès for British icon Jane Birkin — has sold for a record-breaking $10 million at a Sotheby’s auction, becoming the most expensive handbag ever sold.
The bag, which Birkin used nearly daily from 1985 to 1994, fetched a hammer price of €7 million ($8.2 million), with fees pushing the final price to €8.6 million ($10 million). The auction was part of an online sale featuring rare luxury fashion, including pieces by Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior.
The bag’s new owner is a private collector from Japan, who outbid eight other contenders in a dramatic 10-minute bidding war. According to Sotheby’s, the Birkin is unique in design, bearing Birkin’s initials “J.B.” and featuring distinctive hardware, as well as stickers from Médecins du Monde and UNICEF — and even a pair of nail clippers Birkin kept attached for convenience.
Sotheby’s called the historic sale a “milestone” for fashion history. Morgane Halimi, the auction house’s global head of handbags and accessories, said it was a testament to the Birkin’s legendary status and Jane Birkin’s enduring influence.
Unlike pristine Birkins treated as luxury investments, this original piece carries the visible signs of a life lived — scratches, scuffs, and personal touches that connect it directly to its namesake. Birkin, who passed away in 2023, once joked that she might be remembered more for the bag than for her career, recounting how she sketched the idea for the now-iconic handbag on an airplane sickness bag during a flight in 1984.
The original Birkin’s record sale surpasses previous handbag auction highs, including a white diamond-studded “Diamond Himalaya Birkin” that sold for over $450,000 in 2022.
This latest sale cements the Birkin not just as a fashion item, but as a cultural artifact with a story — one that continues to captivate collectors worldwide.
