Origin Energy will refund more than 4,500 customers after an investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) found concerns over its “Ongoing Saver” electricity plan.

The ACCC found that some customers paid more on the Ongoing Saver plan than they would have on Origin’s Basic plan, despite claims suggesting ongoing savings.
Origin has agreed to refund over $270,000, with affected customers expected to receive an average payment of around $60.
The company said it will contact eligible customers directly to arrange credits or refunds.
Although Origin has not admitted breaching Australian Consumer Law, it has committed to ending the Ongoing Saver plan and changing how it markets electricity plans in the future.
The ACCC has reminded all energy retailers that any advertised savings must be genuine and clearly explained so customers can make informed choices when selecting electricity plans.
