Opposition unites against govt over parliamentary body slots

Political parties in Parliament have come together to challenge the ruling National People’s Power (NPP), accusing it of violating parliamentary traditions by not allocating enough slots to the opposition in key committees.

A meeting of opposition parties was held today, chaired by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, to discuss a collective response.

According to a statement from his office, Premadasa urged all opposition party leaders to unite in defending their rights and to raise the issue both inside and outside Parliament.

He emphasized the importance of a strong opposition in maintaining democratic balance.

MP Ravi Karunanayake confirmed his participation in the meeting, stating that discussions centered on the government’s stance regarding committee allocations.

He added that a strategic plan would be unveiled next week.

Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) Leader Mano Ganesan also attended the meeting and revealed that opposition parties would reconvene next week to finalize their approach.

He criticized the NPP for demanding 70% representation in all parliamentary committees, deviating from the traditional structure where the ruling party held only a slight majority over the opposition.

MPs P. Digambaram, Anuradha Jayaratne, and Shanakiyan Rasamanickam were also present at the discussions, signaling a united front against the government’s stance.
