The Opposition in Parliament is considering legal action against Deputy Ministers under the Public Properties Act for allegedly misusing perks such as staff payments allowance, MP Dayasiri Jayasekera announced today.
He noted that the Speaker had recently clarified that Deputy Ministers do not bear responsibility to Parliament, and therefore should be regarded as ordinary MPs. “They cannot claim perks in this scenario. Hence, we are contemplating filing legal action against them under the Public Properties Act,” Jayasekera said.
He further stressed that he would no longer recognize statements made by Deputy Ministers in Parliament and urged public servants not to follow their instructions.
