An Opposition MP told Parliament yesterday that the government is adopting a mild approach regarding the alleged US invasion of Venezuela.
Raising the issue, Opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake questioned why members of the NPP and JVP, who had repeatedly protested outside the US Embassy while in opposition, are now remaining silent on the matter. He noted that even a breakaway group had staged a protest near the US Embassy, while government MPs failed to take a firm stand.
MP Dassanayake also addressed the controversy surrounding the Grade Six sex education module, stating that Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya cannot evade responsibility for the shortcomings. Drawing a comparison, he said that although inferior pharmaceuticals were brought in by officials of the Health Ministry, the then Minister of Health was held accountable and imprisoned.
Similarly, he argued that responsibility for the textbook issue should rest with the Prime Minister and that appropriate action should be taken.
