Opposition leader urges government to offer fair relief for struggling SMEs

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called on the government to urgently implement fair and effective solutions for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs affected by the reactivation of the parate execution law from 30th of June .

He warned that the rapid auctioning of assets by financial institutions under this law could devastate SMEs, which contribute over 50% to Sri Lanka’s GDP and provide jobs to more than four million people.

Premadasa criticized both past and present governments for failing to offer sustainable support, accusing them of suspending the law only during election periods for political gain.

He urged immediate action, including temporary suspension of the parate law, debt restructuring, and interest relief, arguing that the government, with its parliamentary majority and executive powers, must stop misleading the public and deliver concrete, time-bound solutions to revive the struggling SME sector.
