Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday described the 2026 budget as clearly dictated by the IMF.
“It appears that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has read out a budget written by the IMF,” Mr. Premadasa told the media.
He criticized the budget, saying it confirms that the government lacks the ability to alleviate poverty or address the challenges faced by farmers, fisherfolk, and unemployed graduates. He also noted its failure to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are key contributors to the country’s GDP growth.
“The government has failed to fulfil the promises made during the elections,” Mr. Premadasa added, asserting that the 2026 budget aims to continue deceiving the public. “This government seems heartless,” he said.
