Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that the opposition is gripped by fear over the prospect of becoming politically irrelevant.
She emphasized that surpassing the National People’s Power (NPP) requires a genuine commitment to ending corruption and fraud.
Speaking at a series of public gatherings held on April 24 in Teldeniya, Ududumbara, Hasalaka, Kundasale, and Madawala in the Kandy District, Dr. Amarasuriya outlined the government’s achievements and vision for the country’s future.
She noted that despite the severe economic crisis the nation has faced, the NPP-led government has stabilized the economy while curbing corruption and waste. A new political culture is emerging, built on transparency and responsible governance.
Dr. Amarasuriya criticized the previous administration for delaying the 2023 Provincial Council elections, alleging it was an attempt to block grassroots leadership from initiating political change. She affirmed that the NPP’s governance approach is grounded in people-centered development and inclusive decision-making.
Highlighting the government’s strategic priorities, she spoke about rebuilding the healthcare system, improving access to education with rural primary schools, and investing in transport and rural infrastructure. She stressed that development should not be limited to urban centers but should uplift all communities equally.
She explained that the government has allocated funds to benefit all citizens and emphasized the importance of ensuring those resources reach the grassroots level—unlike in the past when such funds were misused. The current administration works as a collective team, empowering public servants and removing political interference to enable efficient service delivery.
Dr. Amarasuriya also expressed support for the private sector and entrepreneurs, stating that the government is ready to provide assistance, revise tax policies, and foster a business-friendly environment. She dismissed opposition claims that investors are avoiding Sri Lanka and praised the growing confidence of the business community in the current leadership.
She emphasized the importance of the upcoming election, stating that it is about developing villages and empowering local communities. She challenged the opposition to match the NPP’s dedication to eradicating corruption and delivering public service.
Calling for collective responsibility, she urged every citizen to reflect on their role in nation-building and act responsibly, stating that the transformation of the country requires everyone’s participation.
The event was attended by religious leaders, government officials, parliamentary candidates, and local residents, reflecting broad support for the government’s development agenda.
