The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has warned that the recent increase in postal rates could contribute to the gradual collapse of Sri Lanka’s postal services.
SJB MP Mujibur Rahman said the government’s decision to raise the minimum postal rate from Rs. 50 to Rs. 70 reflects a move that could weaken the Department of Posts and undermine its long-term sustainability.
He argued that instead of increasing charges, the government should have reduced postal rates to protect jobs within the Postal Department and preserve the service.
Rahman further noted that higher postal costs may push more people toward digital communication platforms such as SMS, MMS, and WhatsApp, accelerating the decline of traditional postal services.
