Only one player under 30 named in Australia’s Ashes squad

Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has defended the selection of the Ashes squad for the first Test against England, saying the team deserves “respect” amid criticism over its age profile.

Only one player under 30 — 26-year-old all-rounder Cameron Green — has been included in the 15-member squad for the series opener in Perth on 21 November.

Former captain Steve Waugh had questioned Bailey’s approach, accusing him of lacking the “appetite” to make bold changes to rejuvenate the side.

Bailey, however, dismissed the criticism, saying: “We’re aware of the age profile of the team. I’m interested when people have that view as to who they would like us to leave out. Is that Nathan Lyon or Mitchell Starc? You’ve got to give due respect that the guys are performing very well and have earned their places.”

Young opener Sam Konstas was a notable omission, with Marnus Labuschagne returning and Jake Weatherald earning his first Test call-up. “I feel for Sammy. At the moment, if he farts it’s a headline,” Bailey joked. “We like his skillset and are confident he’ll continue to develop.”

Pat Cummins, recovering from a back injury, was not included for the opening match but is expected to return for the second Test in Brisbane starting on 4 December.

Veteran pacers Mitchell Starc (35), Josh Hazlewood (34), and Scott Boland (36) are set to lead the attack, with Nathan Lyon (37) as the lone specialist spinner. Steve Smith, 35, will captain the side in Cummins’ absence.

Australia, the current Ashes holders, will face an England side led by Ben Stokes, with the five-Test series running until 8 January.
