Australia’s Sri Lankan-born population reached a record high of 172,800 in June 2024, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This marks a 9% increase from the previous year, reflecting strong migration trends in the post-pandemic period.

The Sri Lankan-born community now ranks as Australia’s 10th largest overseas-born group, surpassing several European-origin populations.
Since 2013, the Sri Lankan-born population in Australia has grown by over 50%, now making up around 0.6% of the total population.

Victoria is home to 52% of this group, followed by New South Wales with 24%, while the median age is between 41 and 42.

The data highlights that 52% of Sri Lankan-born Australians are male, and they are concentrated in key urban centers across the country.
