One of world’s largest container ships docks at Colombo port

One of the world’s largest container ships, MSC MARIELLA, has arrived at the East Container Terminal of Colombo Harbour, marking a historic moment in Sri Lanka’s maritime sector.

According to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), MSC MARIELLA is now the largest container vessel ever to dock at a Sri Lankan port.

The SLPA emphasized that the arrival of this vessel highlights Colombo Harbour’s capacity to accommodate some of the world’s largest container ships, reinforcing its position as a key central port in the Indian Ocean region.

Built in 2023, MSC MARIELLA measures 399.9 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width. It has a gross weight of 240,739 tons and a capacity of 24,244 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).

The vessel’s visit confirms the East Container Terminal’s ability to handle ultra-large ships, thanks to its modern facilities operated by the SLPA.

The terminal is currently equipped with state-of-the-art Ship-to-Shore (STS) gantry cranes, ensuring safe and efficient container handling operations.

The SLPA stated that this achievement demonstrates its ongoing commitment to upgrading infrastructure and enhancing Sri Lanka’s competitiveness in global maritime trade.
