A fundraiser for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation in Melbourne scheduled for tonight has been cancelled at short notice after anti-racism protesters announced plans to demonstrate outside the venue.
Victoria Police confirmed that the event at Italian restaurant Giorgio Casa in Moonee Ponds was called off by the venue, despite the event being fully sold out.
Police said they were not aware of any direct threats, noting that the decision to cancel was made solely by the venue organisers.
Authorities also stated that police officers will remain in the area to monitor any potential protest activity.
One Nation representatives said the event will be relocated to a new venue, although the new location has not been disclosed.
Party leader Pauline Hanson arrived at Tullamarine Airport earlier in the day and addressed the planned protests, saying people should be willing to listen to different political views without violence.
She also emphasised the importance of respect and democratic freedoms, stating that individuals should be able to attend public events regardless of political differences.
One Nation chief of staff James Ashby also made controversial remarks during a media interview, describing protesters in strong terms while suggesting the demonstrations reflected the party’s growing public attention.
The protest was organised by activist groups including Campaign Against Fascism, which confirmed online that its demonstration would still proceed.
Other groups such as No Room for Racism, Free Palestine Melbourne, and Victorian Socialists were also expected to join the gathering outside the venue.
Similar protests were seen earlier in Perth during a One Nation fundraising event, where large crowds demonstrated with placards opposing racism and calling for social justice, while police maintained order.
