More than one in three Australians are expecting a tax refund of around $1,200 as the 2026 tax return season gets underway, according to new survey data.

The findings suggest that more than eight million Australians are hoping for a financial boost from their end-of-financial-year tax returns, with many planning to use the money to cover everyday living costs, pay off debt, or increase savings.

Tax experts are reminding Australians that the size of a refund depends on individual income, tax withheld, deductions, and personal circumstances.

They are also encouraging taxpayers to wait until their income statements are marked as “tax ready” before lodging returns to avoid delays or amendments.

The renewed focus on tax refunds comes as Australians continue to face cost-of-living pressures, making EOFY returns an important source of financial relief for many households.

However, experts also caution that a refund is not guaranteed, and some taxpayers could receive less than expected or even face a tax bill depending on their circumstances.
