A bisexual Sri Lankan woman has been granted asylum in New Zealand after facing death threats from her ex-girlfriend, a soldier in the Sri Lankan army.
The ex-girlfriend, identified as A.A., reportedly forced her way into the woman’s parents’ house at gunpoint in 2021, threatening to kill the mother and the family dog.
The woman told the Immigration and Protection Tribunal that she also feared being forced into another arranged marriage due to her sexuality.
Her troubles began after her parents discovered her teenage relationship with A.A. and coerced her into a marriage with a man.
Despite the arranged marriage, A.A. refused to accept the breakup. Fearing for her safety, the woman sought refuge in New Zealand, where she had initially moved to study.
