The National Transport Commission (NTC) is pushing ahead with efforts to modernise Sri Lanka’s public transport system, including the introduction of a prepaid transit card and the integration of bus routes into Google Maps.

A pilot project for the prepaid electronic fare collection system was launched along the Galle-Makumbura highway to test its accuracy and functionality.

The NTC is also exploring additional digital payment methods, such as QR codes and credit/debit cards, to improve commuter convenience.

In parallel, the NTC is working to incorporate public transport services into the Google Maps platform.

Since 2019, 259 routes from the Western Province, 117 from the Southern Province, and details from the Sri Lanka Transport Board and railway services have been added, with the goal of providing real-time navigation for passengers.

These digital initiatives come as the NTC faces intense scrutiny over its 2023 operations, following a critical report by Auditor General W.P.C. Wickramarathne.

The audit flagged serious issues, including the suspension of the Sri Lanka Transport Card Project after spending Rs. 391,441 without a proper feasibility study.

It also revealed that 25% of 4,625 public complaints in 2023 remain unresolved, most concerning passenger overcharging and reckless driving.

Financial irregularities were also highlighted, including the failure to recover Rs. 45.8 million from expired permits, a discrepancy of Rs. 94.7 million in refundable tender deposits, and a signage project that missed 72% of its targets while incurring a 90% overestimation in costs.

.
In response, the NTC has acknowledged the audit findings and said it is taking corrective actions, including legal proceedings for unresolved complaints and efforts to reconcile financial records.
