Northern Territory residents are paying more for essential services from today, with electricity, water and sewerage prices rising by 5.3 per cent under the Territory Government’s latest pricing decision.

The increase is higher than last year’s 3 per cent rise and comes as many households continue to face cost-of-living pressures.

Treasurer Bill Yan said the increase reflects projected inflation and rising energy generation costs, particularly the higher price of gas needed to supply electricity across the Territory.

Despite the price hike, the government says it is boosting power subsidies by more than $58 million, taking total assistance to $252 million this financial year to help keep household electricity costs down.

However, the increase has drawn criticism from the Opposition and seniors’ advocates, who argue families and pensioners are already struggling with rising living expenses and may find it harder to afford essential utilities.

The government says eligible residents can still access concessions on electricity, water and sewerage bills, while maintaining the price rise is necessary to ensure reliable utility services across the Territory.
