New South Wales police stations are struggling with overcrowding as inmates fill holding cells, putting immense strain on police resources, according to state police chief Karen Webb.
The issue has arisen because some inmates refuse to apply for bail, leading to them being held in police stations for extended periods—a situation known as “Cell Ramping.”
Authorities believe this problem is worsened by overcrowding in the state’s prisons, forcing some detainees to remain in police custody for days.
Police Chief Karen Webb has assured that efforts are underway to address the issue as quickly as possible.
