NPP’s Vraie Cally Balthazaar elected as new Colombo mayor

Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People’s Power (NPP) has been elected as the Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).

She secured 61 votes in the 117-member council, winning the mayoral post with a clear majority.

Balthazaar was elected after a contest against Riza Zarook of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

The election followed a nearly one-hour debate during the CMC’s inaugural session, after which members agreed to use a secret ballot.

In the Local Government Elections, the NPP won 48 seats while the SJB secured 29 seats in the Colombo Municipal Council.
