The National People’s Power (NPP) will take disciplinary action against former Speaker Ashoka Ranwala if it is proven that he has cheated in obtaining his doctorate, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Speaking during a talk show on a private television channel, the Minister said that the party has not yet decided what form of action would be taken if such a situation arises.
Jayatissa noted that both supporters and non-supporters of the NPP have expressed views on the matter, adding that public opinion should be taken into account when deciding on any disciplinary measures.
He further said that MP Ranwala had assured the party that he would submit the relevant certificate soon, but has failed to do so to date.
“I once stated at a Cabinet media briefing that Ranwala would submit the certificate soon. I repeated what he had conveyed to the party at the time. However, he has still not submitted it,” the Minister said.
