National People’s Power (NPP) Anuradhapura District MP P.D.N.K. Palihena has denied allegations that the removal of constructions within the Nuwara Wewa protected area was halted because his property falls within the reserve.
Describing the claims as “entirely false” and politically motivated, Palihena said he is ready to vacate the land at any time if required. He asserted that the allegations were an attempt to discredit the government.
According to the MP, the property in question was legally obtained, with official deeds issued during the Chandrika Kumaratunga administration and construction plans duly approved by the local council.
The Irrigation Department has been demarcating the boundaries of the Nuwara Wewa reserve in recent months. However, officials have reportedly been instructed not to take action against existing structures until a final government decision is made.
Media reports have raised concerns that the suspension of action may be linked to the inclusion of Palihena’s land within the newly designated reserve zone. The MP, however, denied exerting any influence, stating that several other properties also fall within the demarcated area and that any directive would apply equally to all affected lands.
