
The National People’s Power (NPP) has gained control of 192 local government bodies across Sri Lanka, marking a significant political shift.
Of these, the NPP secured an outright majority in 151 councils and formed administrations in 41 more by securing post-election majorities.
The NPP now governs several prominent municipal councils, including Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Kurunegala, Puttalam, and Nuwara Eliya.
In the Pradeshiya Sabhas of Agarapatana, Kotagala, and Nuwara Eliya, the chairmanships are held by the Lanka Workers Congress (LWC), while the deputy chairmanships have been claimed by NPP representatives.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) National Organizer Tissa Attanayake announced that the combined opposition has taken control of 53 out of 95 local councils where no party initially had a clear majority.
Within those 53 councils, the SJB has successfully formed administrations in 22, while the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has secured control of 16 councils in the Northern Province.
At present, 53 local authorities are governed by non-NPP parties, while administrative control of four councils remains unresolved due to disputes.
Sessions at the Seethawakapura Municipal Council, Seethawakapura Pradeshiya Sabha, and Mawathagama Pradeshiya Sabha were suspended due to internal conflicts during secret voting.
The inaugural session of the Aratchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha was postponed due to administrative complications.
By 20th of June administrations had been successfully established in 245 out of the total 339 local government bodies across the island.
