There is no space for the underworld to re-emerge in Sri Lanka, as the corrupt politics that once sustained it has now ended, Plantations and Community Development Minister Samantha Vidyarathna said.
Speaking at a ceremony in Hatton today, the Minister noted that in the past, the underworld and politics were deeply intertwined, with political patronage enabling organised crime both within and outside the country.
“The underworld has now been eradicated, and it is being dismantled step by step. People can clearly see that there is no forgiveness for the underworld anymore. Crushing it does not take much time, but the effort must continue systematically,” he emphasized.
Minister Vidyarathna revealed that intelligence agencies have already identified hidden weapons and assets linked to criminal networks, which are being gradually exposed. He further alleged that some of these caches are connected to former presidents, ministers, and parliamentarians.
“The womb of the underworld existed. Some politicians are denying it, but when searches are conducted, evidence is found within their own homes. The law applies equally to everyone—no one is above it,” he stressed.
Commenting on broader governance, the Minister said the government is committed to restoring discipline and standards across the country, including in public transport. He noted that new regulations for buses and drivers are being introduced to ensure passenger safety, despite resistance from some groups.
“It is not possible to correct a country that has gone down the wrong path for 76 years in just a day or two. But we will bring it back on the right track in due time,” he affirmed.
