No privatisation: govt stands firm on SriLankan airlines

A meeting between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and senior officials of SriLankan Airlines took place yesterday afternoon (8th of April ) at the Presidential Secretariat.

The discussions centered on transforming SriLankan Airlines into a more profitable state-owned enterprise, with a strong focus on short-term and long-term debt management solutions.

The meeting also explored new investment opportunities to support the airline’s financial recovery. The President emphasized the importance of taking all necessary steps to turn SriLankan Airlines into a profit-making entity.

Despite recording operational profits, the airline continues to struggle financially due to past mismanagement and poor decision-making, making it one of the leading loss-making state enterprises. The current government has decided to reverse the previous administration’s plan to privatize the airline. Instead, it will remain a state-owned carrier with a new management structure aimed at improving profitability.

Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, President’s Senior Advisor Duminda Hulugalle, SriLankan Airlines Chairman Sarath Ganegoda, and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
