No personal revenge in reclaiming Ex-presidents’ residences – president

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake clarified that the reclaiming of former Presidents’ official residences is not driven by personal vendettas but is part of fulfilling election promises to establish a new political culture.

During a televised program, the President emphasized reforms such as abolishing pensions for parliamentarians, ending vehicle permits for them, and discontinuing government-funded residences for retired Presidents unless they lack housing.

He praised former President Ranil Wickremesinghe for not using an official residence and thanked former President Hema Premadasa and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa for returning their government-provided residences after the issue was raised.

However, he noted that former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Maithripala Sirisena, and Mahinda Rajapaksa have yet to hand over their official residences, with valuations revealing significant rental values—Rs. 4.6 million monthly for Rajapaksa’s residence, Rs. 2 million for Kumaratunga’s, and Rs. 900,000 for Sirisena’s.

The President assured the public that these measures are aimed at upholding political morality and fulfilling the mandate, rejecting any claims of personal grievances or revenge against former leaders.

President Dissanayake also stated his commitment to avoiding government resources after retirement, reiterating his focus on serving the country rather than personal benefits.
