‘No more scribbles’: Sri Lankan doctors ordered to improve handwriting for patient safety

The Sri Lanka Medical Council has issued a notice urging medical professionals to follow the official guidelines for writing and recommending prescriptions. The Council stressed that these guidelines are vital to ensuring clarity and safeguarding patient safety.

According to the statement, pharmacists and members of the public have lodged complaints about unclear prescriptions issued by some doctors. These poorly written prescriptions have made it difficult to identify the correct medication, creating a serious risk to patients.

The Council pointed out that the ethical guidelines for medical professionals include clear instructions on how prescriptions should be written, all of which are detailed in the official code of practice.

It further warned that disciplinary action will be taken against any doctor who fails to comply with these standards.
