Cabinet Spokesman and Health and Mass Media Minister Nalin Jayatissa says the Government has not held any discussions or taken any decision regarding an extension of the retirement age for judges.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Jayatissa explained that although several professional groups have proposed increasing retirement ages due to longer life expectancy and the loss of skilled professionals during the economic crisis and COVID-19 period, no such proposal concerning the judiciary has been considered.

The Minister noted that the Government previously approved an increase in the retirement age of specialist doctors, medical officers, and dental surgeons from 60 to 63 years in response to workforce requirements and requests from the health sector.

However, he stressed that no discussions have taken place on extending the retirement age of judges and reiterated that the Government has not taken any decision on the matter.
