NLB warns public of illegal ‘Kotu Kapima’ scam

The National Lotteries Board (NLB) has issued a strong public warning about an illegal gambling activity known as “Kotu Kapima,” which is reportedly spreading across various parts of Sri Lanka.

This unauthorized lottery-like scheme involves individuals collecting money illegally, using the last two digits of official lottery results to determine winners.

The NLB emphasized that “Kotu Kapima” is entirely unlawful and does not contribute to any form of national development or public service. The Board urged the public to stay away from such scams and avoid falling victim to them.

According to the NLB, several arrests have already been made during raids linked to “Kotu Kapima,” and legal action is underway. The Board has also informed police stations across the country to take necessary action against those operating these illegal setups.

The NLB clarified that proceeds from official lottery sales benefit the nation directly. About 20% of the income supports over 20,000 families through commissions for agents, dealers, and sellers. Over 50% is allocated for prize money, while the rest is directed to the national treasury to fund public welfare and development projects. Institutional expenses and taxes are also covered by this revenue.

Reiterating its warning, the NLB stated that illegal gambling schemes like “Kotu Kapima” only benefit their operators and offer no value to the public. Citizens are strongly advised to avoid participating in such unlawful activities.
