Nipah virus detected in Colombo in 2018–2019; health expert warns it may still be present

The Nipah virus has been detected in Sri Lankan fruit bats in samples collected from Colombo between 2018 and 2019, and it could still be present today, according to Prof. Neelika Malavige.

Referring to a research article published on bioRxiv, she stated in a post on X that symptoms in humans usually appear within 4 to 14 days after infection.

In her post, Prof. Malavige noted that there is no reason to assume the virus is no longer present and reiterated that the incubation period in humans typically ranges from four to fourteen days.
