At least nine university students, including Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) convenor Madushan Chandradith, were arrested this afternoon for participating in an illegal protest in front of the Ministry of Health.
According to the Police Media Unit, the arrests were made by the Maradana Police for violating a court order issued earlier in the day by the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court.
The protest was organised by the Allied Health Science Graduates’ Union to press several demands. However, the court order had specifically barred protestors from entering Hospital Square and disrupting hospital activities between 12:00 noon on 16th of May and 5:00 p.m. on 17th of May.
The arrested individuals are currently being held at the Maradana Police Station.
