Nilanga Dela, former Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, has been appointed to act in the post for three months by the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs, on the recommendation of the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters.
The position became vacant following the expiry of the term of office of Basnayake Nilame Nilanga Dela on Sunday (07th).
According to sources at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, an election for a new Diyawadana Nilame must be held before December 07 under the supervision of the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs.
Acting Diyawadana Nilame Nilanga Dela, Basnayake Nilame of the Natha Devala A.S.S. Bandaranaike, and Basnayake Nilame of the Kataragama Devala Duminda Bandara Udurawana have informed the Mahanayake Theras that they will contest the election.
