U.S. Judge Frank Caprio, widely known as the “nicest judge in the world,” has passed away at the age of 88 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Caprio gained international recognition for his kindness and compassion toward people in his courtroom, showcased in his reality show Caught in Providence, which aired from 2018 to 2020.
According to a statement posted on his Instagram account, he died “peacefully” on August 20 after a “long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.” The statement praised Caprio for his compassion, humility, and belief in the goodness of people, noting that he touched millions of lives both in and out of the courtroom.
“His warmth, humour, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him,” the statement read. “He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired.”
Clips from his show circulated widely on social media, earning him the title of the “Nicest Judge in the World” and attracting 1.5 million followers on TikTok and 3 million on Instagram. In 2023, Caprio revealed his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in an emotional Instagram video around the time of his birthday, describing the disease as “insidious.”
