New Zealand is introducing updated post-study work visa pathways aimed at strengthening its international education sector and supporting workforce needs. The new policies will provide additional opportunities for international graduates who wish to remain and work in the country after completing their studies.
The government plans to introduce a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa in late 2026 while also expanding eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa. International students studying in cities such as Auckland and Wellington are expected to benefit from clearer pathways to employment and better alignment between education outcomes and labour market demand.
Under the proposed Short-Term Graduate Work Visa scheme, eligible graduates will be granted up to six months of open work rights after completing an approved qualification in New Zealand. Applicants must have studied full-time in the country for at least 24 weeks and obtained a qualification at levels 5 to 7 under the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF). However, the qualification must not already qualify them for the Post Study Work Visa.
Applicants must also demonstrate that they have at least NZD 5,000 in funds to support themselves while searching for employment. Medical documentation, including a medical certificate and chest X-ray where required, must also be submitted.
The visa will allow graduates to work for an employer under a formal employment agreement or contract for services, but visa holders will not be permitted to start or run a business during the six-month period. Applications must be submitted within three months of the expiry of the student visa. Authorities will also require written approval if the graduate studied under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme.
Officials noted that the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will be issued only once and cannot be extended or reapplied for in the future.
Meanwhile, eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa will also be expanded to include graduates who complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7, with the change expected to take effect in late 2026. Applicants must complete the diploma through full-time study in New Zealand and remain enrolled throughout the programme.
Graduates must also hold a bachelor’s degree, either from New Zealand or overseas, and provide proof of the qualification and official academic transcripts. Immigration authorities may verify overseas degrees if necessary.
The Post Study Work Visa will allow eligible graduates to remain and work in New Zealand for a period equivalent to the duration of their Graduate Diploma studies, with the visa capped at a maximum of one year.
Unlike the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, holders of the Post Study Work Visa may support their partners and dependent children, who can apply for visitor, work or dependent student visas if they meet the relevant requirements.
However, immigration rules specify that individuals can obtain only one Post Study Work Visa, meaning graduates who have previously held the visa will not be eligible to receive another even if they complete additional qualifications.
