The Youth and Sports Minister, Sunil Kumara Gamage, appointed a new National Sports Council on Friday to guide the development, promotion, and governance of sports in Sri Lanka.
Former Sri Lanka rugby captain Priyantha Ekanayake has been named chairman.
Ekanayake, who has played professional rugby in New Zealand and Wales, previously chaired both the Sri Lanka and Asian Rugby Unions.
The newly appointed council includes experts from various sports and professional fields, such as former cricketers Sidath Wettimuny and Roshan Mahanama, Olympic hurdler Sriyani Kulawansa, and Sri Lanka’s first Olympic badminton player, Niroshan Wijekoon.
Other members include university professors, legal professionals, and experienced sports administrators.
Minister Gamage presented letters of appointment during a ceremony at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, attended by Deputy Minister Eranga Gunasekara.
The council is expected to play a crucial role in shaping Sri Lanka’s sports policies and supporting athlete development.
