New project to deliver birth certificates by post

Sri Lanka today launched a pilot project to deliver national birth certificates directly to citizens via the Sri Lanka Postal Courier Service, the Department of Registrar General announced.

The initiative was inaugurated at the Gampaha District Secretariat under the patronage of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government Minister Chandana Abeyratne. It is a joint effort by the Registrar General’s Department and the Postal Department to enhance the secure and efficient delivery of official documents.

Implemented under the e-Civil Registration Programme, the project currently applies to birth certificates for children born after January 1, 2021. Officials stated that the postal partnership will provide a faster and more reliable service to the public.

Minister Abeyratne described the initiative as a “historic milestone”, noting that a formal memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Postal Department will soon be signed to expand the service nationwide. He added that the project aligns with the government’s broader digitalization and administrative reform agenda aimed at improving public service delivery.
